On-course truck crashes at Tour de Luxembourg

The final stage of the Tour of Luxembourg was marred by an accident when a truck slowed on the course and the peloton crashed.

With 67km remaining in the stage, the peloton was heading up the Bourscheid climb when a truck stopped on the inside of the corner and slowed to avoid it, causing the peloton to group up.

The UCI later stated via a post on Twitter that incidents during the race, including several traffic-related incidents during the first stage, would be discussed at the next meeting of the UCI Management Committee.

"The multiple incidents reported during the Congress related to shortcomings in race organization are unacceptable and will be investigated and reviewed by the UCI Management Committee next week. Appropriate measures will be taken to ensure the safety of riders at the Congress," the official UCI account UCI_Media (opens in new tab) posted.

The Bahrain McLaren duo of Fred Wright and Santiago Buitrago, Thomas Buda (Alcare Samsic), Emile Plancaire (Sport Vlaanderen Valoise), Thibaut Ferasse (Natura 4ever - Roubaix Lille Metropole) and many others hit the deck and were involved in crashes.

Evgeny Gidic (Astana) sat on the roadside with cuts and road rash and abandoned the race. Groupama-FDJ's Ignatas Konovalovas, who was involved in open traffic on the first stage, was sarcastically applauding during the accident.

The peloton protested during the second stage after a series of incidents in the first stage. Jacopo Guarnieri of Grupama-FDJ detailed the safety issues on this stage on Twitter. On the final stage, cars were parked on both sides of the road, buses were parked with 4.5 km to go, and Konovalovas had to ride through general traffic as he was running 5 minutes behind the peloton, despite having led early in the stage.

The riders neutralized the stage after 18 km of racing and only resumed racing for the final 42 km around the Hesperan circuit.

After stage 5, Guarnieri again lamented the race's safety issues on Twitter (opens in new tab).

"I am speechless at the poor organization of the Skoda Tour regarding security. 'This accident was as predictable as the sun rising every morning. This accident was predictable, just as the sun rises every morning. Nothing has changed since we asked for more security during the first stage."

"I decided to tweet yesterday because there was a tractor (yes, a tractor loaded with shit) at the bottom of the road downhill. It wasn't a parking lot, it was a tractor rolling downhill. Then I couldn't wait to complain again. Luckily, they did even better today."

The crash on stage 5 is the latest in a string of accidents that have threatened rider safety since the season resumed. Previously, in the Criterium du Dauphiné, Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo Visma) and Emmanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) crashed on a poorly maintained descent, and in the Tour de Wallonie, a bad road caused a crash, Remco Evenpole ( Detuning-Quick-Step) crashed on a low bridge at Il Lombardia, Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) was run over by a car in the same race, Fabio Jacobsen (Detuning-Quick-Step) went through weak barriers at the Tour de Pologne Crashes, and a series of crashes in the first stage of the Tour de France.

The UCI pledged after the Dauphiné to increase safety checks on the race following complaints from riders and their union, the CPA. At the Tour de France, a number of riders participated in a chat group with CPA representatives to improve communication on rider safety issues.
