Van Grooten, despite broken wrist, does not rule out World Championships

Elite women's road race world champion Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) will compete in the 2020 UCI Road World Championships in Imola, Italy, on September 26, in the Netherlands, despite missing Thursday's Giro Rosa with a broken wrist after a fall. He has not ruled out competing as part of the national team and defending his title.

"My doctors are thinking very much in terms of possibilities, and I was surprised about that," Van Vleuten said Saturday on Dutch broadcaster NPO Radio 1's radio program Langs de Lijn (Along the Line), according to NOS.nl. [But it's not that complicated a fracture. But it's not that complicated a fracture. I don't know, because I'm in optimal recovery mode right now."

Van Vleuten said he underwent surgery on Saturday and was "fixed in 30 minutes. On Monday, he will wear a brace on his wrist and could compete in the World Championships.

"Who knows," she said of her chances in next Saturday's 144-km elite women's road race. 'I don't know what the future holds. On Monday, she will consult with her doctor and be fitted for a brace, and then she will be able to cycle in that brace.

According to NOS, Van Vleuten's spot in the World Championships individual time trial on September 24 has already been given to Trek-Segafredo's Ellen van Dijk, but the Dutch cycling federation KNWU has announced that Van Vleuten has been selected to represent the eight-member road race to be selected, stating that "we will leave the option open."
