After three weeks of hard work and a final time trial, Tadej Pogachar and UAE Team Emirates took the overall win in the Tour de France. How much did they earn as official prize money for their efforts? A total of €624,230 (US$734,000).
Pogachar won €500,000 for the overall win, €20,000 for the young rider prize, and €25,000 for the mountain prize.
When these figures are compared to other sports, such as the UEFA Champions League prize money of 1.1 billion euros, the Super Bowl prize money of 11 million dollars, and the U.S. Open prize money of 4 million dollars, the total prize money of 2.293 million euros seems reasonable, but it was distributed among 160 players It is probably only one of the top ten in e-sports.
In the Tour de France, prize money for the top overall finishers accounts for the majority of the total prize money, with the top 10 GC riders accounting for 42% of the total prize money.
This puts UAE Team Emirates at the top of the overall prize money standings. Jumbo Visma follows in second place with €342,860. The Movistar team can thank Enric Mas and Team Classification for most of the €169,590 in third place prize money.
Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick Step) took the green jersey and €25,000, plus €70,870 for the intermediate sprint, top stage finish, and first place for the points prize. Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), meanwhile, earned €35,290.
Mountain prizes of between €200 and €850 are awarded on each climb, depending on the category. Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) was wise to attack on the Col de la Lozée, as he was the only one to make it to the top of the climb.
Special incentives were given to the young riders, with cash prizes for the top young riders of the stages and the white jersey class leader of each day. With this prize money and a super-combat prize worth €20,000, Marc Hirschi (Team Sunweb) won €58,590.
Finally, with the top team ranking worth €2,800 per day and the best team worth €50,000, Movistar was worth keeping four riders at the top of the overall ranking.
