Kazakhstan reports that Miguel Angel Lopez will move on from Astana, where he has been for six years, at the end of the 2020 season.
The Colombian, who finished sixth in his debut Tour de France on Sunday, will compete in the UCI Road World Championships in Imola this week before heading to the Giro d'Italia to help Jacob Fuglsang fight for overall victory.
According to Prosports.kz, team manager Aleksandr Vinokurov said that the Italian Grand Tour will be his last race in Astana, adding that team budget limitations will not allow him to keep Lopez beyond 2021.
In April, the team cut wages for riders and staff by 30% due to the economic impact of the COVD-19 pandemic.
Astana cited administrative delays as the reason for the late payments, but added that the entire 2020 budget had been approved by Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund, Samruk Kazyna.
Lopez, who turned professional with Astana in 2015, made the podium at the 2018 Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a EspaƱa. The 26-year-old's victories while with Astana include the Tour de Suisse, Volta a Catalunya, Milan-Torino, and two stages of the Vuelta.
His most recent victory came on the summit of the Col de la Rose on stage 17 of this year's Tour de France, but he was knocked off the podium in the final day's time trial and finished sixth overall, 6:17 behind eventual winner Taddei Pogachar.
