Deceuninck-QuickStep's Remco Evenpole's comeback from the broken pelvis he suffered in last month's crash at Il Lombardia has begun in earnest, with doctors telling him he can begin bike training indoors again.
The 20-year-old underwent new tests Friday at a hospital in Herentals, Belgium, and doctors told him he could begin riding on his home trainer while continuing rehabilitation with a physical therapist, his team reported Saturday.
"I'm feeling good," he said. 'I have very little pain, and I can move around a lot better. I can now put my crutches to one side and I'm happy to start working in a more targeted way," he said in a press release.
"My recovery process has been going well for the past few weeks," the Belgian continued. 'Initially, I found it difficult to move on from what I had. But after the necessary rest period, I've been able to move more and more recently."
Evenepoel misjudged a corner on the descent of Il Lombardia's Muro di Solmano on January 15 and crashed into a ravine. Although he was one of the favorites to win next weekend's Giro d'Italia, his first Grand Tour, Evenpoel will return to competition only for the 2021 season.
"In the next few weeks, I will spend a few hours at the physiotherapist's during the weekdays doing exercises for pelvic stability and flexibility. If all goes well and the weather is nice, I can go outside and ride my bike."
"I can say that a real recovery has begun for me. My next goal is to complete a proper training session on the rollers and then ride my bike outdoors. We'll see how that goes."
"I definitely don't want to go out in the rain and take the unnecessary risk of slipping. When the weather clears up, I definitely want to enjoy some training rides outdoors."
