Simon Yates leads Mitchelton Scott in the Giro d'Italia

Mitchelton Scott has announced its lineup for the upcoming Giro d'Italia, and Tirreno-Adriatico champion Simon Yates will lead the team as it looks to add to the 13 days it spent wearing the pink jersey at the 2018 event.

Yates won two stages in the Tour de France after finishing eighth in last year's Giro, won three stages before finishing 21st in Rome the year before, and spent stages 6 through 18 in Maria Rosa.

At this year's Giro, which runs October 3-25, he won the Tirreno-Adriatico overall, winning on the summit of the Sassotto.

"Tirreno was a great win and I am very proud of what I achieved there. But the big goal is always the Giro, so hopefully I can keep my form up until the end of the Giro," Yates said in a team press release.

." Since then I have returned to the highlands of Andorra to finish my preparations at home." "I am killing two birds with one stone, spending the necessary time at home while preparing to arrive in top shape for the Giro."

Yates said that with the Giro's date change to October, the race will be much different than usual and that bad weather will play a bigger role than in May. He added that he is prepared for that.

"The Giro is a hard and unpredictable race. You need to be ready at all times to adapt your strategy for victory. Usually in the Giro, the weather gets better day by day as we approach spring and summer. This year, bad weather is expected and I am mentally ready.

"I am very happy with the team we have assembled. This is basically the same team we worked with in Tirreno, and it's very important for the Giro to understand how we work with each other on and off the bike."

Yates will join the full team that accompanied Tirreno-Adriatico at the start in Sicily, where Damien Howson will also join the team.

Italian time trial specialist Edoardo Affini will make his Grand Tour debut in Italy, with Jack Haig, Brent Bookwalter, and Tirreno stage winner Lucas Hamilton providing mountain support. Australians Michael Hepburn and Cameron Meyer round out the team of eight.

"Regardless of the result in Tirreno, we were always going to be among the favorites to win.

"Simon has made no secret of his ambition to win the Giro, it's a race we came close to winning in 2018 and I think we've continued to learn since then. He has learned from his mistakes and experiences and a lot of water has gone under the bridge since 2018.

"It's not rocket science, but consistency over the three weeks will be key. Hard starts, hard finishes, and many kilometers in between."

White added.

White added that the three time trials in the Giro (65 km long) will be key to the overall contenders. He said the goal will be to limit losses there and to be aggressive in the mountains. [Not many Grand Tours, especially in this day and age, have this many time trials.

"We are up against a world-class time trialler in Geraint Thomas, the leader of Ineos. The other rivals are in the same tier as Simon, and we want to limit our losses in the three time trials and take our chances on the climbs.

"All climbers, including us, need to be aggressive. The when, where, and from whom will be interesting, but we will have to take our time."
