Team Sunweb announces its team for the Giro d'Italia. Versatile sprinter Michael Matthews will lead the pack, with Wilco Kelderman and Sam Omen in contention for the overall. [Matthews will return to Mitchelton-Scott in 2021, Kelderman will move to Bora-Hansgrohe, and Omen will join Jumbo-Visma. Matthews finished third in the Milan-San Remo and seventh in the World Championship road race. Kelderman was fourth overall at Tirreno-Adriatico last month, while Omen was 11th.
"This is a great restart to the season, with the team performing well across the board in multiple races and an impressive performance in the Tour de France. The team is really motivated and the riders are eager to continue this success in Italy," said Sunweb coach Luke Roberts. [During the season, we have been meeting weekly to discuss team tactics and goals, and our good results at the high altitude training camp in Kutai and recent races have proven that we are in good shape.
"In Italy, we will be chasing two goals as a team: a good GC result and a stage result, and we will be racing with strong climbing support to back up our GC ambitions.
American Chad Haga, who won the final stage time trial in Verona last year, has finished five times and is the most experienced Giro rider on the team.
Kelderman (three times) and Oomen (twice) have both finished in the top 10, and Matthews is looking to add to his four stage wins in his return to racing after a four-year absence.
Martijn Tassfeldt will be making his Giro debut, while Jai Hindley, Chris Hamilton, and Nico Denz have raced the Giro before.
