Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso unveil the Aurum Magma road bike.

Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso have won nine Grand Tours.

Aurum's first product was Magma, and both Contador and Basso were heavily involved in the frameset design process.

Contador and Basso wanted to create a superior UCI race-standard weapon that would rival the best road bikes, even though the days of these Grand Tour riders racing may be in the past. They combined their knowledge and vast experience to create the perfect road race bike.

For Magma, design director Inigo Gisbert took on the challenge of creating a frame that was both stiff and compliant. The Magma project was both exciting and demanding at the same time." Taking advantage of all the benefits of composite construction, Magma has reoriented the fibers depending on their position on the frame. This allows for ample vertical compliance and road damping that reduces rider fatigue on epic weekend rides.

Magma's design team used different tube profiles for the various frame sizes based on aerodynamic principles.

Material was removed wherever possible to optimize aerodynamics without sacrificing torsional stiffness. An example of this is the kink in Magma's seat tube, which is truncated toward the bottom. The bike's torsional stiffness is supported by the oversized BB386 EVO standard bottom bracket. [12mm stealth through axles front and rear contribute to Magma's overall aerodynamic drag coefficient reduction, as does a custom wedge that houses a 27.2mm seatpost.

As one would expect from a boutique brand, Aurum uses different fork offsets for each Magma size. Recognizing that fork trail is an extremely important but often ignored geometry value in overall frame design, Aurum uses a 50mm offset fork on the two smallest Magma models, while all four larger sizes use a 44mm offset.

In addition to its striking appearance and attention to aerodynamics, the Magma is compatible with both electronic and mechanical road bike groupset.

Available in six frame sizes (50-, 52-, 54-, 56-, 58-, and 61-), the reference weight of Aurum's Magma frame is 805 g.

Key geometry figures include a stack height of 505 mm to 615 mm, while the frame range head angle is 71.6 degrees for the smallest size and 73 degrees for the rest.
