Groenewegen will miss the remainder of the 2020 season.

Jumbo Visma has announced that sprinter Dylan Groenewegen will miss the rest of the 2020 road season, according to NOS.nl, at the Binkbank Tour in Blankenberge, Artur van Dongen, sport Director) that Groenewegen caused a crash that seriously injured Deceuninck-Quick Step's Fabio Jacobsen at the Tour de Pollogne, pending a decision by the UCI Disciplinary Committee.

After the August 5 crash, Jacobsen was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent a five-hour surgery that required more than 130 stitches to repair his jaw and palate. He lost all but one tooth. Jacobsen was able to return to the Netherlands a week after the accident, but has not yet recovered from his injuries.

Last week, former Dutch champion Jacobsen sent a letter of thanks to teammate Florian Seneschal.

Seneschal was the first to arrive on the scene after Jacobsen crashed. Jacobsen was sprinting along the barriers in an attempt to pass Groenewegen and take the first leader's jersey in the high-speed downhill sprint on the opening stage in Poland. However, Groenewegen deviated from the line and got in front of Jacobsen. The barrier cracked on impact and hit Jacobsen in the face.

Senechal thanked Jacobsen on Twitter. After your accident I went to see you first. I just lifted your head so you could breathe. You will come back stronger than ever."

Groenewegen also fell in a post-goal impact and broke his collarbone. But the Dutch rider was devastated that he had caused such an injury to a colleague and that he had received numerous threats, including promises of legal action from Quick Step manager Patrick Lefevre.

The week after the crash, he gave an emotional interview to NOS, taking responsibility for the crash, saying I don't even want to think about riding my bike for the next few months. I'm going to think about what's next. Hopefully Fabio will recover fully and we can compete against him in sprints in the future."

He added, "I'm not sure if I'll be able to ride again in the future.
