Lizzie Deignan Allowed to race on instinct without fear of failure

Lizzie Deignan took her first title on Sunday after failing to stop an attack on La Redoute, the iconic climb of Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Trek-Segafredo's Deignan attacked with 30km to go and was desperately chased by Mitchelton-Scott's Grace Brown, who escaped to take the win.

Deignan said he was able to win thanks to his Trek-Segafredo teammates.

"I am really, really happy. It's because of the team's performance and me being lucky enough to finish it."

"It was a really hard race, but Anna Prikta and Taylor Wiles did a great job from the beginning. We didn't have to worry even though it was pretty treacherous and wet. Eventually I was able to jump into the break with Ellen [van Dijk]. I think it was the confidence of being on this team and the coaches who let me race on instinct. I'm not afraid of failure [it was Ellen who said to me, 'Lizzie, go out for La Redoute. I was sure I had won in the last 500 meters."

When Deignan attacked, there were still several unclassified climbs to go, but with van Dijk marking her closest rivals in the back group, she quickly gained a minute on the chase group.

When Braun attacked and launched a brilliant chase, the Australian cut Degnan's lead to just over 10 seconds on the descent into Liège, and it looked as if they would make contact with a few kilometers to go.

But the Trek-Segafredo rider had nerves and kept the Mitchelton rider at bay. Grace Brown came up behind me and I knew how good she was at time trials and I was getting more and more stuck in my legs."

"I was just trying to keep up with the other riders,"

"I was just trying to keep up with the other riders.

"I'm really happy! Thanks to my teammates, staff, and sponsors, I was able to focus on being a professional athlete. This is simple and I feel lucky because I have the support of the best team in the world."

The win in Liège was the closest Trek-Segafredo came to victory earlier in the week at La Flèche Wallonne, but was ultimately overshadowed on the final climb, with Degnan coming out on top, finishing fourth.

"I have been waiting to win a classic race like this and many times I have come so close to missing out on victory. Today we had the perfect team. It's a win for Trek-Segafredo."

"The best thing about this team is that we are allowed to race on instinct, without fear of failure.

Deignan's victory propelled her to the top of the UCI Women's World Tour rankings ahead of the Cobbled Classics, which begin in less than a week.

"It was a team effort on our part. With Elisa close by, I can enjoy the next race thinking about the jersey."
