Jumbo Visma's team for the Vuelta a España has not yet been announced, but Tom Dumoulin has revealed that he and Primoš Roglic will be aiming for the Spanish Grand Tour.
In an interview with Dutch regional broadcaster 1 Limburg (opens in new tab), Dumoulin insisted that he would cede leadership of the team to a rider he considered stronger.
Dumoulin, who moved from Team Sunweb to Jumbo Visma for 2020, sacrificed his own chances to support Roglic in the Tour de France. As the team dominated the race, Dumoulin became an important assistant, but he was robbed by Tadej Pogachar in the time trial on the final day, a disappointing result.
Dumoulin again played a supporting role over the weekend for Roglic, who won Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and did not rule out the possibility of the same thing happening in the Vuelta. He did not rule out the possibility of the same thing happening in the Vuelta.
"If I am better in the Vuelta, he will ride for me, and if Primozh is better again, it will be the same scenario as in the Tour," Dumoulin said.
"I don't want to ride for myself and finish seventh ...... What if he finishes fourth and I did nothing for him?"
In the aftermath of his crushing defeat in the Tour de France, Roglic's plans for the rest of the season were uncertain, but he appears to have recovered from his victory in Liège and is eager to continue racing and defend his Vuelta crown.
The Slovenian won his first Grand Tour last year in Spain, which was also the scene of Dumoulin's breakthrough as he came close to winning in 2015.
Dumoulin won the 2017 Giro d'Italia and finished second in the Corsa Rosa and Tour de France in 2018. However, his form this season and his prospects at the Tour were hampered by a long absence from racing since his crash at the 2019 Giro.
"I'm where I want to be," Dumoulin said of his condition, having recovered from his Tour de France effort.
"I'm riding very well and getting a little bit better every week. If not this year, then next year I hope to get back to top form."
The 2020 Vuelta a España, reduced to 18 stages, will start in the Basque Country on October 20 and finish in Madrid on November 8. There will be one individual time trial on stage 13, and the 33.7 km course will be mostly flat until a short climb at the finish, with summit finishes in Tourmalet, Angril, and Alto de la Covatilla.
Humob Visma will also send Tour de France domestiques Sepp Kuss and Roberto Gesink to Spain as part of a strong lineup.
