Yates misses Giro d'Italia after testing positive for coronavirus

Mitchelton-Scott's Simon Yates has tested positive for coronavirus and will miss the Giro d'Italia, it was announced Saturday morning.

In a team statement, Mitchelton-Scott announced that British climber Yates (21st overall, 3:52 behind race leader Joan Almeida (Deceuninck-Quick Step)) developed mild symptoms Friday evening after stage 7 and subsequently tested positive for COVID- 19 positive test, the team announced.

According to team doctor Dr. Matteo Bertemacchi, Yates continues to have only mild symptoms and is feeling well, but has been quarantined to a single hotel room during the examination and will be isolated.

"During a routine temperature check, which is performed three times a day during the Giro d'Italia, Simon showed a very mild fever on Friday evening," Dr. Bertemacchi said in a statement.

"In accordance with the team's RACESAFE COVID-19 policy, he was isolated to a room and we immediately requested a rapid test using the services provided by the RCS (Giro's organization).

The team reported that "a second RT-PCR test was later performed and confirmed positive."

"Simon's health remains our primary concern, but thankfully, his symptoms remain very mild and he is otherwise healthy," Dr. Bertemacchi continued.

"We want to thank the RCS for their support in arranging a quick examination and his transportation.

"All other riders and staff tested negative and have been cleared to continue racing, but as a precautionary measure we will monitor the situation closely and will have further tests in the next few days.
