As previously reported in Cycling News, Ineos Grenadiers' Eoghan Bernal has fully recovered from the back injury that forced him to retire from this year's Tour de France and has decided to put an end to the 2020 season in order to be fully prepared for the upcoming season.
Bernal, the defending champion, retired on stage 16 of the Tour last month after battling a back injury that forced him to retire from the Criterium du Dauphiné in mid-August.
It had been speculated that the 23-year-old Colombian might recover to ride with Chris Froome at the Vuelta a España later this month, but Froome will share the leadership with Richard Carapaz in Spain, ending Bernal's season The team was to end the season.
"I have been 100% focused on my recovery and my return to competition in 2021," Bernal posted on Instagram on Saturday. 'There have been hard times. But it has given me great motivation to work even harder to get out of the pain and back on the bike at full strength again."
"I've been working hard to get back on the bike, and I've been working hard to get back on the bike.
After taking some time off the bike to rest after his early Tour loss, Bernal has been undergoing fitting sessions with a bike specialist in Germany and is also working on strengthening his back in the gym.
"You certainly learn more from the bad than the good," he said. I've had a few accidents in my sporting career, and each time I've learned something new about myself. So now it's time to get back to work."
