Jumbo-Visma's Wout Van Aert heads into Sunday's Ghent-Wevelgem knowing that he has only two more races left in his season as a road rider, and the 26-year-old's ambition is to win both Ghent and the Tour of Flanders on October 18 to win both Ghent and the Tour of Flanders on October 18.
"I plan to compete in two more road races this season," Van Aert said on the team's website on Saturday.
"I plan to ride both with the ambition of winning. I want to be in the Tour de Flanders final."
"My condition has been very good for a long time," he said. Van Aat's victories this season include a win at Strade Bianche in early August, a win in Milan-San Remo, two stage wins at the Tour de France, and silver medals in the time trial and road race at the world championships in Imola, Italy, last month.
"In Imola, I felt like I came out of the Tour de France well," said the Italian. I felt good in training and hopefully I can continue this form for a few more weeks." My season has basically already been a success. Top performances are a bonus. Still, I don't want to take any chances.
In Ghent-Wevelgem, I will have strong support from the Jumbo-Visma Cobbled Classics team, which includes Mike Tunissen, the experienced Maarten Winants, and Amund Jansen, who is also on the Tour team this year.
Sunday's race will be Van Aert's third alongside Ghent-Wevelgem, where the Belgian finished 10th in his first appearance in 2018 and 29th last year.
The following weekend, the Tour de Flanders will also be his third appearance, and likewise he finished in the top 10 with a ninth place finish in 2018 and 14th last season.
