Geraint Thomas: The season was just getting started, but now it's over.

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), who crashed and fractured his pelvis in last week's Giro d'Italia, says he is still "pretty sore."

Thomas crashed just after the start of stage 3 of the Giro d'Italia last week after hitting a stray water bottle. He completed the stage, and although X-rays initially showed nothing broken, further X-rays the next morning revealed a fractured pelvis, forcing him to withdraw from the race.

"Physically, to be honest, I'm still quite sore," Thomas told Welsh-language broadcaster S4C this week. 'It's probably bad having [my young son] Maxen around and chasing him around. He's still pretty sore when he walks, and he's leaning a little bit like a gangster, but he's got crutches, so he's fine. It's just going to take some time."

Thomas said he remembers everything about the crash and immediately felt the same sensation as when he crashed in the 2013 Tour de France and broke his pelvis.

"I remember seeing something orange at the last second," Thomas said.

"I remember my left hand slipping on the bar and I couldn't control my left hand side because I couldn't control my left hand side," he said.

"At the time I thought I was saved, or half saved, but then I remember straightening up a little bit and then wobbling again and hitting the deck," Thomas recalled. Because I was obviously breathing very fast, and within a split second I was on the floor." [It was the exact same feeling I had when I broke my pelvis in the 2013 Tour. From the bottom of my heart, I thought, 'Something's wrong. I didn't know if it was broken or not, but I knew that whatever the damage was, it would take some time to recover. Once I knew I could move my leg, I got up. I hit the back of my head a little bit, but the majority of the impact was on my left side and my hip."

Now it will be a few more days before Thomas is completely off the bike.

"I saw a specialist and he said I couldn't ride the bike for two weeks. Then a month later I had another MRI and was limited to walking."

"But it's the off-season anyway, so I'll just relax at home," Thomas said. When you end a season, even if it's a bad one, it's tough and long. This time, on the other hand, it's like the season is just coming to an end."

"It's very strange not to be doing anything, and physically I don't feel like I've earned this time off, but that's just the way this year is. But that's just the way this year is and you have to look forward to it.

"I've had a few drinks since the crash.

"It's made November and December a bit of a struggle for me to finish my Welsh cakes and beers, as usual.
