Women's Tour of Flanders, 4 teams eliminated, including defending champion Bastianelli

The Allee BTC Ljubljana team will be without defending champion Marta Bastianelli after she missed the Women's Tour of Flanders. The team had to abandon Ghent-Wevelgem due to a COVID-19 infection in the team.

According to Fortunato Laccaniti, director of Allee BTC Ljubljana, the team is still in quarantine and the results of the retest for the virus will not be known until Saturday.

"We are very sorry, but we have to abandon the race. There are deadlines and rules to respect and we have no other choice. In addition, the athletes have been virtually suspended for the past week and will not be able to compete in optimal conditions for such an important and demanding race," Lacquaniti said.

The Astana women's team and the Cheval-Mer team also withdrew from the race due to concerns about the COVID-19 situation.

"We will not be on the Ronde because it would be irresponsible to put our players and staff at risk. We also have an important social responsibility as a team to prevent further contamination," Sporza reported the Chevalmere team as saying.

Ekip Poleka pulled out after the team's title sponsor failed to meet its obligations. The team has no funds to continue racing.

The CCC team withdrew from Brabantse Pijl due to a coronavirus infection.

Bastianelli won the 2019 event with Annemiek van Fruten and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig in a three-race sprint competition.
