Julien Alaphilippe crashes at the Tour of Flanders

Julien Alaphilippe (Elegant Quick-Step) crashed while attacking with 40km to go in the Tour de Flanders with Wout Van Aert (Jumbo Visma) and Mathieu Van Der Pol (Alpecin Phoenix). He was subsequently diagnosed with fractures of the 2nd and 4th metacarpals of his right hand. He will undergo surgery on Monday. Mathieu Van Der Pol (Alpecin-Phoenix) won the race. World Champion Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin Phoenix), who had set the race alight with several attacks, crashed into his bike during the race. He was in last place behind van Art and van der Poel and did not notice the bike slowing down in front of him.

Van Aert and van der Poel managed to avoid him, but Alaphilippe hit his right shoulder on the bike and fell hard.

He was immediately treated by paramedics, but it appeared that he had injured his right shoulder and right wrist. He was unable to continue the race.

His team later confirmed his injuries in a short statement. Julien Alaphilippe had contact with his bike in the last 35 km of the Ronde van Vlaanderen and had to abandon the race. The world champion was taken to a hospital in Ronse, where X-rays confirmed fractures of the second and fourth metacarpals of his right hand," Elegant Quick-Step said. Alaphilippe, who made his final appearance of the season in Flanders, where teammate Yves Lampert finished fifth, Elegant Quick-Step's highest finish, will undergo surgery Monday morning at the Hellenthal Clinic by Dr. de Schreiber."
