Three WorldTour teams simultaneously announced bike sponsorship deals for 2021. Jumbo-Visma has a new partnership with Cervélo, Mitchelton-Scott with Bianchi, and Team Sunweb with Scott.
In the first three changes, Bianchi will end its seven-year contract with the Jumbo-Visma team and join forces with Mitchelton. The men's Jumbo-Visma and the new women's team will ride Cervélo bikes in 2021.
Cervélo will work with Team Sunweb starting in 2019, launching the radical-looking S5 aero bike. The partnership comes to an end when Team Sunweb signed an agreement for both men's and women's teams to use Scott's bikes from 2021 onward.
Scott's nine-year contract with GreenEdge Cycling will end and the Mitchelton team will use Bianchi's Cheleste bikes. The name of the Australian team will be changed accordingly, but details of this change have not yet been announced.
Effective January 1, 2021, Jumbo Visma riders Wout Van Aert, Primoz Roglic, and Tom Dumoulin will have a choice between Cervelo's S5 aero bike, the lightweight R5, the P5 time trial bike, and the recently released Caledonia race bike for cobbles They will have a choice between.
Mitchelton's Simon Yates and newcomer Michael Matthews will be given the same or even wider choice of bikes for the 2020 season, including the Oltre XR4 and Aquila time trial bike from Jumbovisma. Bianchi will also offer a lightweight new Specialissima, but it has not yet been confirmed if it is the disc-equipped model recently added to the UCI's list of approved frames and forks.
Team Sunweb has confirmed that it will be given a Scott Addict RC and a new foil for road racing, along with a Plasma time trial bike.
"After nine years with Green Edge Cycling/Mitchelton Scott, we decided it was time for a change and found the ideal partner for a new start for Team Sunweb," explained Pascal Ducrot, vice president of Scott Sports.
All three teams are using Shimano group sets for the 2020 season, so there is likely to be no change in that regard, but the announcement will start the debate over rim brakes versus disc brakes.
Even though Jumbo Bisma will continue to use rim brakes in 2020, this is widely rumored to be due to the weight of the disc brake-equipped Oltre XR4. Conversely, similar weight concerns have been raised about Cervelo's disc-brake-equipped models, although the S5 and R5 are effectively committed to discs.
Sailen Cragg Andersen and Marc Hirsch of Sunweb have been spotted riding the R5 with rim brakes.
Interestingly, Mitchelton Scott is committed to disc brakes throughout 2020, but has not yet confirmed which technology will be used in 2021. The only foregone conclusion is that Sunweb's mixed use will be a full commitment to disc brakes as offered by Scott's lineup.
