Fernando Gaviria, again COVID-19 positive.

Fernando Gaviria tested positive in the latest Giro d'Italia test after contracting COVID-19 for the second time and spending nearly a month in the hospital in March.

The Colombian was one of two people, along with AG2R La Mondiale staff, who tested positive in the Giro d'Italia's second rest day test. Both have left the race and have been quarantined from the team.

"Gaviria was immediately quarantined following the test results, but is feeling well and is completely asymptomatic," a statement from UAE Team Emirates said.

"All other riders and staff tested negative and will undergo further tests today. The team's medical staff are monitoring the situation closely and are doing everything in their power to ensure that the race can proceed safely."

"We are very pleased with the results of the tests," the team said.

All of Jumbo Visma's riders left the race after Steven Kruijswijk tested positive on the previous rest day, but UAE Team Emirates will start stage 16 on Tuesday and continue the Giro, as will AG2R La Mondiale, which is still No announcement has been made, but their bus was in Udine, the start of this stage.

A total of 492 people were examined on Monday's rest day, the results of which came as a relief to the race organizers. After eight positive results last Monday, EF Pro Cycling suggested that the race bubble was "compromised" and called for the final week to be cancelled.

However, the 2020 Giro will likely go all the way to Milan on Sunday, where the winner will be decided after 21 stages.

Meanwhile, Gaviria's re-infection is likely to be of great concern not only to cyclists but also to doctors involved in coronavirus research. Some evidence suggests that it is possible to be re-infected with coronaviruses, but so far such cases are rare.

Gaviria spent almost a month in an Abu Dhabi hospital in March after contracting COVID-19 during a tour of the UAE. However, he reportedly suffered only mild symptoms and was discharged when three tests came back negative.

"The fever went down after two days and I didn't feel anything after that. I had no coughing fits, no lung pain, nothing. I had to wait a very long time before the tests came back negative, but in hindsight, the important thing is that I felt normal during that time."

Gaviria returned to Colombia before resuming the season at the Vuelta a Burgos in late August. He rode for 39 days, winning stages at the Tour du Limousin and the Giro della Toscana. At the Giro d'Italia, he was far from his best, with his best finish coming in seventh place on stage 11.
