Jolien D'hoore (Boels Dolmans) was the first to cross the line in the sprint finish of the Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne one-day race. However, she was disqualified for an irregular sprint for obstructing Lorena Wiebes (Team Sunweb) in the last 100 meters.
"I wanted to predict [Lorena Wiebes]. I went off my line. Therefore, I was disqualified.
With 1,500 meters to go, the 24-man breakaway was broken up by an attack by Defour's teammate Amy Peters. Team Sunweb's plan was for Allison Jackson to lead Wiebes, but Jackson had to chase Peeters to give Wiebes a chance to win on the finish straight.
Jackson led Wiebes and caught up to Peeters at the 1km banner and pushed the pace. Wiebes, however, did not want to start the sprint too early, so he took the steering wheel of Pieters. Behind Wiebes, the pack, including Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo), made contact again.
With 500 meters to the finish, Jackson was still in front, accelerating into the headwind. Peeters did not want to lead Wiebes' sprint, so he swung to the side. This opened up a gap behind Jackson. Longo Borghini was the first to begin his sprint, chasing Jackson.
Longo Borghini was unable to catch Jackson, so Dohle began his sprint. Dohle quickly closed the gap on Jackson and turned around on the right side.
"I had to overtake the rider in front of me so I moved to the middle of the road. 'Then I moved back towards the barrier on the left side because of the wind on the finish straight. At that point no one was beside me.
But Vives was right behind me and was sprinting. Just as Dufour was about to move back to the left, Wiebes tried to pass Dufour on the left side. However, the gap to Doffour's left was closing so quickly that Wiebes had to temporarily relax his pedaling and carefully steer to avoid the railing in the last few meters. Despite this, Wiebes finished only a few centimeters behind Dufour, and the race jury decided to demote Dufour.
The Belgian sprinter sent out a tweet after the race: "I did not intend to let Lorena Wiebes crash into the barriers. I did not intend to let Lorena Wiebes crash into the barriers. If the judging panel decides to impose a DSQ for overkill, I have no choice but to accept their decision. I am really disappointed to end the season this way. Congratulations to Team Sunweb and Lorena."
D'Hoole then took to Twitter in her native Flemish to clarify her choice of words. I wanted to anticipate her, not ride the barrier. I went out of my line. I was disqualified because of it.
Sports Director Danny Stam was also disappointed to miss out on victory in the last race for Boels Rentals and Dolmans Landscape Group, his team sponsor for eight years.
"We wanted to put Icing on top today and fought hard to give the team a fitting farewell. But it didn't happen. Jorian went a little too far off the line and the judges ruled," Stamm said in a press statement.
Stamm later told Cycling News that the team accepted the judges' decision to demote Dufour.
"In a close sprint, Jolyan could not hold his line. 'In our opinion, it was right on the limit, but the jury decided it was too much. After all those crashes, the jury should be more strict. "
Despite the expiration of the current sponsorship agreement, the team will continue to race under the name of its new sponsor, SD Worx, after 2021.
