Pfeiffer Gheorghi fractures two vertebrae in crash against Bruges-De Panneh

Team Sunweb's Pfeiffer Georgi was diagnosed with two fractured vertebrae in her back after a fall by a British athlete at the AG Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne on Tuesday. According to the team, the 20-year-old will need to wear a neck brace until she recovers, but will not require surgery.

"Yesterday at the AG Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne, Pfeiffer Georgi was involved in a crash that unfortunately ended her race. She was taken to the hospital where she underwent tests to determine the extent of her injuries. This examination revealed small fractures in two vertebrae in her back.

"She will wear a neck brace for the next three weeks to stabilize (her back) and relieve pain. She will return to the UK to recover and then make a decision about returning to biking."

Georgi will turn pro with Sunweb in 2019 and signed a contract extension in July that will keep her with the Dutch team through 2021.

"I appreciate their continued support, especially given the current world situation," she said after re-signing with the team. 'I will learn and improve from the coaches, the experts, and the other riders on the team.'

Georgi was forced to retire from Tuesday's Driedaagse Brugge-DePanne after a crash, but her Sunweb teammate Lorena Wiebes took the win.
