Marco Pinotti Joins Mitchelton Scott Performance Team

Marco Pinotti has moved on from the CCC team and will join Mitchelton Scott's performance team in 2021.

A highly regarded former professional coach, Pinotti is yet to finalize the day-to-day details of his role, but is expected to bring a wealth of coaching knowledge on time trials and training. He will work with the existing coaching and performance group of the Australian team and may also be involved as a director sportif for some races.

The move came about after Pinotti made contact with current Mitchelton Scott racer Brent Bookwalter; the two had worked together during their time at BMC Racing, and with the CCC set to disband, Pinotti knew that his next job would be a rewarding and a corporate culture that valued rider development as much as CCC did.

In September, Bookwalker told Pinotti to speak with Brent Copeland, general manager of Mitchelton Scott, and from there Pinotti and Copeland began discussing their options.

"First and foremost, I would be a physical trainer. I'm going to be a physical trainer," Pinotti told Cycling News from the Vuelta a EspaƱa.

"I know I've joined a great organization and although some of the details of my role are still being worked out, I know I will fit in with the team. I was looking for a team that had a certain culture for improvement and goals, and I've found that with the right team, I've been able to achieve those goals.

"After years in the same organization, I too wanted to get out of my comfort zone, but I know that in a different environment I can give a lot and get a lot at the same time. I'm very excited. I look forward to working with the riders and helping them perform

"Two years ago, when BMC Racing had to disband, I didn't take the chance because I wanted to stay loyal to the organization. But in terms of personal growth, it was an easy decision."

Pinotti and Copeland have a longstanding relationship dating back to the early 2000s, when Pinotti was a rider and Copeland was the director of Lampre.

Pinotti, who retired in 2013, turned pro with the Lampre team and spent several years with the Italian team as one of Copeland's riders. Copeland has watched Pinotti grow from rider to coach over the past few years and believes the Italian will help improve the performance of its riders.

"I have known Marco for years and have watched his career develop. He has done a great job and has been meticulous as a rider," Copeland told Cycling News.

"We wanted to invest in a performance group and more trainers. We now have an excellent staff in that area and they are doing a great job. They are very professional, but Marco will be a very important helper to the team. I have always had great respect for his training methods and work ethic

"Brent Bookwalter told me that Marco might be available and the conversation went from there. Marco has a friendly personality and fits in with a lot of teams. He gets right to work and I immediately felt he would be a good fit for him, the riders, and the rest of the performance team."
