After an impressive season racing for Ekip Paul Ca, Marlen Reusser has signed a contract with the women's world team, Allee BTC Ljubljana, for 2021. The Swiss champion and time trial specialist hopes to continue winning medals at major events such as the European Championships, World Championships, and Olympics.
"I will concentrate on the most important time trial events where I have a shot at a medal, such as the European Championships, World Championships, and Olympic Games," Reusser said.
"I also want to improve my technique and achieve good results in road racing. To do so, I will be able to learn a lot from the experienced riders of the new team like Marta Bastianelli."
Reusser will start her career in 2019 with the World Cycling Center (WCC) program, Ljubljana Domžale Ljubljana and won the time trial at the European and Swiss National Championships. He also won the Swiss road race title that same year and placed sixth in the time trial at the World Championships in Yorkshire.
In 2020, with Ekip Pole Ka and the national team, Reusser defended his time trial title at the Swiss Championships and won bronze in the time trial and silver in the mixed relay at the European Championships. At the World Championships in Imola, he won a silver medal in time trial.
In road racing, Reusser finished fifth overall in the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, seventh overall in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and tenth in the mountain road race at the World Championships.
However, her team, Ekip Paul Ca, has had a financially tumultuous season, announcing in October that it was forced to close immediately after its title sponsor failed to pay part of the sponsorship funds agreed upon for 2020. The title sponsor also said that the team's owner and the company had completed negotiations regarding the termination of the sponsorship agreement.
Reusser listed several reasons why he would like to join Alley BTC Ljubljana next year.
"One is that I have always admired this team, I like the good atmosphere, the right way to live this sport, and the Italian attitude towards life and sport, and I want to learn Italian. The team is led by a strong woman named Alessia Piccolo, who is an important inspiration to the whole women's cycling community and her team. She likes the management team, has talked to them a lot, and shares their ideas. I am delighted to be able to pursue new goals with these women," Reusser said.
Team manager Fortunato Laccaaniti said he had been interested in signing Reusser since she won the Europeans last year.
"The addition of Marlen is a very important reinforcement for the team. We are talking about one of the best time trial specialists in the world. She proved that at the last ITT World Championships when she came within 15 seconds of (Anna) Van der Breggen.
"Even before she won the Europeans in Minsk last year, we had already spotted her.
