The 2021 Vuelta a España will start inside the Burgos Cathedral next August 14 with an individual time trial around the Spanish city, organizer Unipublic announced Thursday.
The athletes will start from the cathedral's main entrance and complete the "urban circuit" of Burgos, race director Javier Guillén said, to showcase the "monumental character" of the capital of the province of Burgos in northern Spain.
The distance of the time trial has not yet been announced, but according to a press release, the course will pass through Burgos Castle and finish at the Cathedral.
The Spanish Grand Tour was postponed until October of this year due to the coronavirus, but will return to its August start date in 2021 to celebrate 800 years since the construction of the Burgos Cathedral began in 1221.
Angel Fuentes of the Spanish professional team Burgos BH appeared on Thursday as the presenter of the opening stage of the 2021 Vuelta, setting up a mock start ramp inside the cathedral's entrance. Burgos Mayor Daniel de la Rosa added that using the monument for the start of the Vuelta was "something special."
The shortened, rescheduled 2020 edition of the Vuelta is currently underway, with the ninth stage of the Aguilar de Campau reaching the halfway point on Thursday, with 2019 Giro d'Italia winner Ineos Grenadier's Richard Calapaz continues to lead defending champion Primoš Roglic (Jumbo Visma) by 13 seconds.
