Medjeck renews contract with Mitchelton Scott through 2022

Mitchelton Scott announced that Luka Medjeck has accepted a two-year contract renewal to race for the WorldTour team through 2022. Slovenian-born Luka Medjeck said he looks forward to working closely with Michael Matthews, who will return next year, on the sprint.

"The last five years have been a dream come true for me to become a professional cyclist, and it's all because of our relationship with each other here: dedication, work ethic, freedom, and trust. We push each other to our limits and have a lot of fun in the process," said Mezgec, who joined the then Orica Bike Exchange team in 2016.

Mezgek began his WorldTour career with Argos-Shimano in 2013 and spent three seasons with the Australian team. He has competed in a total of nine Grand Tours, five in the Giro d'Italia and three in the Vuelta a EspaƱa, but made his first attempt at the Tour de France this year, finishing second on stage 14 to Lyon and second on stage 19 to Champagnol.

"I really enjoyed my first Tour de France. The team backed me up really well and the bittersweet second place confirmed for me that I can fight with the best in any race, regardless of the name."

Mitchelton Scott announced in August that Matthews would return to the team in 2021 after four seasons with Team Sunweb. Matthews played a key role for Mitchelton Scott from 2013-2016.

Mezgec and Matthews raced together during the 2016 season before Matthews moved to Sunweb's program. He also spent three seasons with Caleb Yuan at Sprint from 2016 to 2018 before the Australian moved to the Lotto Soudal team.

"The signing of Bring (Matthews) was really good information for me. As for Caleb, I found the role fascinating and as a sprint train I was able to send him out smoothly in the last 200 meters on many occasions." Making quick decisions on the road with a sprinter on my wheel is one of the greatest feelings I've had in cycling.

Mezgec said he envisions not only helping Matthews in the sprints, but also having his own opportunity to play for the win in a hilly race.

"We are both climbers, so there will be more cards to play in the finals on tricky courses. So there will be more cards to play in the finals on tricky courses. If the race opens up with a hard final, we can take advantage of each other's attacks to our advantage."

"Overall, I'm looking forward to the next two years.

Mitchelton-Scott head sport director Matt White was impressed with Mezgec's performance in this year's Tour de France and said the Slovenian continues to improve and fits in well with the team. He also sees Mezgek and Matthews complementing each other in the race.

"He's been on this team for a long time and is an integral part of the chemistry in this organization.

"I think the combination of Luka and Bring will be really good next year. I think in a lot of the races that we're going to target with Bring next year, Luka will be able to play a role here. But if we go with the two of them together, they will be a formidable duo in certain tactical aspects."
