Richard Calapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) will carry La Roja on his back as race leader and will be the last rider to roll off the start ramp of stage 13 of the 2020 Vuelta a España on Tuesday. The 33.7-km time trial in northwestern Galicia starts in the coastal fishing town of Muros and climaxes with a powerful climb to the summit of the Mirador de Ezaro.
The 1.8 km climb averages 13.5%, although the early difficulties may be due to the wind.
Primoš Roglic (Jumbo Visma) is the favorite to win this stage and could take La Roja back from Calapaz just 10 seconds behind the leader. Three other GC riders, though not time trial specialists, are trying to cut into Calapaz's lead: Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) is 22 seconds back, Dan Martin (Israel Startup Nation) is 25 seconds back, and Enric Mas (Movistar) is 1:40 back.
There are 151 true race starters on stage 13. The finish time may not complicate the GC storyline, or it may continue to thicken the plot for Sunday's crescendo in Madrid.
