Eike Visbeek, the new performance director of Circus Wanty Gobert, told Cycling News that the team's biggest challenge in 2021 will be to move from the second division to the World Tour and compete in all three grand tours.
The Belgian team, which currently races at the pro team level, will purchase a World Tour license from Continuum Sports (the company that runs the CCC teams) in the fall and join the top league of cycling teams in 2021.
The team has already reinforced several riders, with Jonas Koch, Jan Hilt, and Georg Zimmermann moving from the soon-to-be defunct CCC team. The team is deliberately targeting climbers in the transfer market, and rumors abound of Louis Maintus, whose contract with NTT Pro Cycling is expiring.
"I need to move from the Pro Continental stage to a longer, heavier WorldTour season," Visbeek told Cycling News after his move from the SEG Cycling Academy to the team was finalized.
"I will be managing the planning and performance plan to get results and make a good transition. I will be the hub for the riders, trainers, sport directors, and management."
Visbeek described Meintjes as "definitely the type of athlete we are looking at," but the team is also looking to increase its roster to around 29 riders for next year, with riders from the SEG Cycling Academy He also confirmed that the team will bring in a rider from the SEG Cycling Academy in order to increase its roster to around 29 riders for next year. The main challenge is the hard schedule, which includes three Grand Tours. It will make the season harder, but we need to make sure the riders are fresh and able to perform at key moments, because we can't have them running at full capacity from February until the end of the season," Visbeek added.
"On the one hand, we want riders who can grow with the team, and on the other hand, we want proven World Tour riders. Our priority right now is to get riders on the team who are ready for the Grand Tours. We are looking for riders who have proven themselves in the World Tour and in the climbing category.
"Our current riders have had success at the pro conti level, so another goal is to replicate that in the World Tour. I want to finish in the top 10 in the classics as often as possible, and in the Grand Tours I'm looking for stage wins."
Visbæk said he is unaware of any deal for next season with Mark Cavendish, who is out of contract with the team, keeping the team away from signing other riders. The team has already acquired sprinter Danny Van Poppel for next season.
