The UCI has released its pro team registration list for the 2021 season, revealing a number of changes among the 37 WorldTour and pro teams.
In headline news, Circus Wanty Gobert has been registered to replace the CCC team, whose WorldTour status is currently being reviewed by the UCI. In addition, Eolo Cometa and Cologne Pharma, run by Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso, have applied for professional team status.
Eighteen WorldTour teams are named to the 2021 list, not including NTT Pro Cycling. Team boss Doug Ryder said Thursday that the team is "piecing together the puzzle" to compete in the race next year after Japanese tech giant NTT did not extend its sponsorship deal. [The UCI said in a statement, "We would like to state that teams not on this list may still submit final applications before the end of the registration process, which will be determined by the conclusion of the Licensing Committee's public hearing scheduled for December."
There are a number of other name changes in the peloton: AG2R La Mondiale will become AG2R Citroën, as already announced, and Bahrain McLaren will become Bahrain Victorious, after the automaker withdrew its sponsorship.
Mitchelton Scott is listed as GreenEdge Cycling, the team's management company, and EF Pro Cycling remains the same, despite rumors that Japanese construction company Nippo will be involved. The company is not included in Delco One Provence, the pro team sponsored in 2020.
At the professional team level, 19 teams have applied, with Eolo-Kometa (the continental team known as Kometa-Xstra this season) hoping to step up. The team, which recently hired Sean Yates as head of performance, will be run by former pros Contador and Basso and will welcome Italian broadband operator Eolo (sponsor of several RCS Sport races) in 2021.
Spanish continental team Carn Farma has also applied to compete. This team was founded in 2020 as the parent team of the long-time amateur team Lizarte, with former professional athlete Juanjo Oroz as director sportif.
Denmark's Rewal Securitas is off the list of teams applying for professional team status, but earlier this week it was reported that the team, facing financial difficulties, requested an extension of the application deadline.
Elsewhere, Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec is listed simply as Sidermec after Italian media reported that the toy company had pulled out after 14 years as title or co-sponsor; B&B Hotels-. Vital Concept became B&B Hotels-Klub Glaz following the transfer of farm equipment supplier Vital Concept, and Caja Rural-Seguros RGA became Caja Rural, the bank's insurance subsidiary, and appears to be exiting for 2021.
