Only twice before has the same rider won the world championship road race and time trial in the same year: once in 1995, when Frenchwoman Jeannie Longo won the world championship, and the second time this year, when Anna van der Breggen took the rainbow jersey in Imola The second was this year, when Anna van der Breggen won the rainbow jersey in Imola.

The 2020 season was a good one for the Dutch women, with their third overall win at the Dutch national road race, the European Time Trial Championships, the Giro Rosa, and their seventh consecutive victory at Flèche Wallonne.

The world is at Van der Breggen's feet as she enters her final season as a professional.

Speaking to Thomas Allstuen in the December 2020 issue of Procycling magazine (opens in new tab), she said: "Even before this season started, my career was successful. I think that's why I was able to run with a relaxed mindset; I've never won so many races in one month."

She also said: "I've never won so many races in one month.

She explained: "Having won the Dutch Championships and the European Championships, my season was already made, no matter what happened. Having won the Dutch and European Championships, my season was already set, no matter what happened.

Another star of the women's peloton, Tennielle Campbell, also appears in this month's Pro Cycling magazine. The Trinidadian native, the first rider from the island nation to become a professional in the sport, told Sophie Halcomb what it was like to be a pioneer.

Campbell said: "I didn't get here through someone's connections or someone I knew. I've worked hard for it. And to still be here, competing against the best in the world and not only surviving in the peloton, but actually being competitive, is a really big deal."

The 2020 Classic season was a strange one, taking place in October instead of spring, thanks to a coronavirus pandemic. Edward Pickering reflects on this crazy month, which culminated in Mathieu Van der Pol's victory at the Tour de Flanders.

"The final race of the 2020 Classics season, a fierce sprint in Oudenaarde, was the real curtain raiser, with Van der Poel narrowly edging Van Aert. Now the monuments are one by one (and one by Julien Alaphilippe). There is no way it will end like this."

Also in this month's Procycling magazine, Owen Rogers covered the Giro Rosa. While the race was thrilling to host this year, with crashes, bad roads, and a lack of television coverage, the number one spot may be in jeopardy in the future. [But the Giro Rosa offers something that no other women's race does: After only two years since its 1988 debut, the Giro Rosa is the oldest and longest stage race on the women's calendar at its usual 10 days. It is the only "Grand Tour."

Photographer Christophe Lamont was in Brabantspaille, Belgium. Newly crowned world champion Julien Alaphilippe nearly cracked the finish line for the second race in a row, but won the rainbow-striped race for the first time.

One rider who stood out in the Tour de France was Nielson Powles. He spoke to Adam Beckett about being a Grand Tour tourist, racing breakaways, and fitting in with EF Pro Cycling. He said: "It was a really hard Tour, but I think that's a good thing. It's good that the Grand Tours are getting harder.

Elsewhere, Sam Bury spoke about being with Mitchelton-Scott since the team's inception, but he had to wait until this year to make his Tour debut. He also hosted a podcast with fellow New Zealander George Bennett to discuss his transition from the track to the road.

Making his Tour debut this year was Nance Peters, who added to his stage win in last year's Giro by winning stage 8 in Rudenwil, climbing the Peyresur pass. He spoke to Edward Pickering about how he won and beat some of the better climbers.

There is also a feature on the relationship between cycling and death, with Jeremy Whittle exploring how the peloton deals with the fact that some riders pay the ultimate price just to ride a bike.

Additionally, this month you can read the thoughts of regular diarist and columnist Lawrence ten Dam.
