Lizzie Deignan and her Trek-Segafredo team will win both the individual and team rankings of the 2020 UCI Women's World Tour. Deignan admitted that she did not start the season expecting to win, but was pleased to have won the overall title at the end of a tough season for everyone.
Deignan, who won three of the 11 WorldTour events this season, the Ploué GP, Tour de France La Course, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, first took the overall lead at La Course in late August. He then briefly lost the lead to Anna van der Breggen of Boels-Dolmans in Flèche Wallonne in September, but Degnan regained the World Tour leader's jersey with a win in Liège on October 4 and kept it throughout the season.
Van der Breggen finished the season ranked No. 1 in the world, while Trek Segafredo Women finished the season ranked No. 1 in the world and Elisa Longo Borghini finished the season ranked No. 2 in the world.
"I'm really happy to win the Women's World Tour overall," Deignan said on the team's website. "It's something I didn't expect at the start of the season. The fact that Elisa was second in the rankings shows how strong we were as a team and we were able to win the World Tour team ranking.
"I think it reflects the hard work and dedication everyone put into this season," the 31-year-old continued.
"It wasn't an easy season by any means. I have great admiration and respect for my American teammates who came over from the US and raced as hard as they could during a season where you never know when you're going to get home. [Australia's Lauretta [Hanson] was in the same situation. And Audrey [Cordon-Lago] and Elisa had a really hard time, not being able to practice out there. They were really inspired and motivated by everyone's dedication, enthusiasm, and motivation for the race." The team had a lot of momentum, just like Audrey became the French national champion. When considering what led to her and the team's success in the wake of the coronavirus and pandemic that season, Deignan suggested that it was old-fashioned teamwork that got them through.
"I think it was the fact that we were such a cohesive team and always kept each other motivated. We have complete trust and respect for each other and I think that shows in our racing. This is only our second season as a team, but it was not a surprise to see us achieve such good results. In the winter training camp before the pandemic hit, we found that we were in very good shape both on and off the bike."
Team Director Ina Toitenberg added, "In 2020, we achieved our specific goals and more by winning the WWT team and individual classes. I think this proves that we came out of lockdown in good shape physically and mentally. The team worked extremely hard and it showed in the results.
"This is our second year as a team, and despite the unusual year, I think the riders have bonded well. I think we can build on this strong team foundation for next season and aim to win some big races."
"The riders trust each other and each is willing to give everything for the team. I think that has had a big impact on this season and is one of the key reasons for our great success.
