Rigoberto Urán will remain with EF Pro Cycling for another two years with the goal of a podium finish at the Vuelta a España.
The 33-year-old announced his contract extension at a virtual event hosted by Tour Colsubsidio in Colombia, and while EF Pro Cycling has yet to confirm that Uran will remain with the team, Cyclingnews reports that Colombian under-23 national champion of Daniel Aroyabe has also been confirmed to join the 2021 WorldTour team.
EF is expected to sign a sponsorship deal with the Colombian government to complete its 2021 budget, and Spanish website Zikloland claims that Uran's retention with the team is tied to this deal.
EF Pro Cycling has lost several key riders for 2021, including Dani Martinez to Ineos, Tanel Kangert to Mitchelton Scott, and Sepp Vanmarcke and Michael Woods to Israel Startup Nation were lost. However, team manager Jonathan Vaughters offered new contracts to all riders who accepted salary sacrifices during the spring COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
U.S. champion Alex Howes, who raced only two days late in the season, said on Twitter that he is looking forward to another year with Lachlan Morton, who recently renewed his contract with the team.
2019 Tour de Flanders winner Alberto Bettiol also signed a new contract, while Hugh Carthy is signed for 2021 but is likely to secure a contract increase after finishing third in the Vuelta.
Uran finished third overall in the 2017 Tour de France and second in the Giro d'Italia in 2013 and 2014, despite coming back from a major crash in the 2019 Vuelta that fractured his left collarbone, shoulder blade, ribs, two vertebrae, and damaged his lung. and finished eighth in this year's Tour.
Last week, Uran underwent surgery to remove a metal plate and screws before beginning training for 2021. He will participate in the Giro de Rigo on the Zwift platform on Sunday, November 15 and Monday, November 16, along with other World Tour riders.
Uran's personality and results have made him extremely popular in Colombia, where he also serves as a mentor to other young Colombians in EF Pro Cycling. He helped Dani Martinez win the Criterium du Dauphiné and Sergio Igita win the Colombian 2.1 race in February.
