Tao Geoghegan Hart, who won more than 300,000 euros at the Giro d'Italia, lost part of his prize money when he accepted a bet he made with his brother.
When his brother Bede told the 25-year-old he could win the Giro, he told him to "stop being silly" and that if he won he would buy him a car.
Just a few days later, Geoghegan Hart turned the race around in the Alps and took the Trofeo Senza Fina on the final podium in Milan, wearing a maglia rosa. This week he had an appointment in a London car showroom.
This week, after visiting the Pinarello store in London and being presented with a commemorative pink bike, Geoghan Hart revealed the terms of his bet.
"Have you heard about the bet I made with my other brother?
"I bet him on stage 15 that 'there's zero chance of winning, don't be stupid, I'll buy you a new car if you win.' So."
True to his word, Geoghan Hart bought new wheels and took a picture with his brother on the hood of his blue Volkswagen.
"The score is set," he wrote on social media. 'My kids are not to gamble... . and not to bet against themselves."
Geoghegan Hart's two stage wins and overall victory were just a fraction of the total prize money for the Ineos Grenadiers. With four stage wins for Filippo Ganna and one for Honatan Narvaez, the British team, which won seven stages, took home roughly 430,693 euros.
Team Sunweb took home €278,093 with Jai Hindley and Wilco Kelderman on the podium.
