Jean-Pierre "Gempy" Drucker of Luxembourg has signed a one-year contract with French WorldTour team Cofidis. He is expected to work on Elia Viviani's sprint trains and Guillaume Martin's stage races, but will also get his own chance on the Classics stage.
The 34-year-old joins after two seasons with Peter Sagan at Bora-Hansgrohe, and before that he spent four seasons with BMC, including stage wins at the 2015 RideLondon-Sully Classic and the 2016 Vuelta a EspaƱa
Drucker is a former member of the BMC team.
Drucker is a true all-rounder, able to work as part of a sprint train or on the cobbles of the classics; a Luxembourg time trial champion in 2017, his skills on all terrain and his ability to work on different aspects for the team leader, seems to attract Cofidis.
"We are delighted to welcome Gempy to Cofidis," General Manager Cedric Vasseur said in a press release on Friday. He is an experienced rider who will play an important role throughout the season."
"During the 2020 season, we realized that there was an element we were missing in the sprint train of Elia Viviani and in the race situation where the echelon is formed. Gempy has all the qualities needed to fill that role and help lead the team." He is also an experienced Classic rider and will be one of our main Classic riders next season.
Drucker said he looks forward to taking on these various roles and assisting his teammates as much as possible.
"I'm a very versatile rider, so not only will I be able to help Elia Viviani in the sprint, but I'll also be able to support Guillaume Martin in the stage race if he's going for the overall classification.
"Cofidis is a great team with a long history in cycling and has some quality riders on its roster. It's important for the team to know how to race in the peloton when they get a little nervous and to have riders who can read the race. Said Drucker: "I can't wait to join the team and give my all for my new teammates."
