The Movistar team announced Monday that it has re-signed American rider Mateo Jorgenson and Swiss rider Johan Jacobs through the end of the 2023 season.
The two-year deal comes after a shortened 2020 season, which was cut short due to the Coronavirus outbreak that canceled many races, but the Spanish team has faith in the talents of the two riders.
The 21-year-old Jorgensen raced 22 days this season, finishing Milan-San Remo in 17th place, his most impressive result; he won the points prize at the 2019 Tour de l'Avenir and Tirreno-Adriatico later in the season, Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and also served as reserve for the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España.
"His qualities for tough courses and conditions have already been proven in his first season on the World Tour," Movistar said in a statement Monday.
Jacobs, runner-up in the 2019 U23 Paris-Roubaix, made his debut in 2020 in the northern classics, albeit in late summer, finishing 16th in Ghent-Wevelgem.
In addition to renewing the contracts of Jorgenson and Jacobs, the Movistar team will have 25 riders on the 2021 team, including Ivan Garcia of Bahrain McLaren, Gregor Mühlberger of Bora-Hansgrohe, and Neo Pro Abner González of Puerto Rico. team.
