Trek-Segafredo has completed its 2021 roster, welcoming former junior road race world champion Jakob Egholm as its 29th rider.
Egholm, 22, won the rainbow jersey in Qatar in 2016, riding solo in a race that was expected to be a group sprint. He has the Classics as a future goal and will join a team of five Danish riders along with compatriot Mads Pedersen, a former elite world champion.
Like many U23 riders, Egholm had little opportunity to prove his mettle in a season devastated by the Coronavirus pandemic, but still became the latest rider to move from the Hagens Berman Axiom development team to the World Tour
"I've been riding for a while now, and I've been on the World Tour.
"I'm very excited to be joining this team. I still can't believe it, but I'm really excited to be part of the team starting January 1. I've been watching the team race in big races on TV since it started and I'm excited to be a part of this team. I hope to do well with this team and I am eager to show my potential. I will do my best to be a good teammate and help the team win," said Egholm.
"I think racing in the Classics suits me. I feel like I'm still a young, inexperienced guy and I don't know exactly what my capabilities are. I'm confident that with a great coach and great riders I can make a good path for me."
"I will be joining a growing group of Danes within Trek Segafredo. It's great to have Danish riders on this team and I think we can do some exciting things together."
Luca Guercilena, manager of Trek-Segafredo, added. When we look at the young riders, Jacob is a former Junior World Champion who can certainly add value to the team. We believe he can develop into an important player in the future. He has proven to be a good team player and that will be his role next year."
For Trek Segafredo, Egholm will be joined by fellow Danish neo-pro Matthias Skjermors, young Italian Antonio Tiberi, NTT Pro Cycling's He will be the fourth newcomer to the team next year, following Amanuel Gebregxavier. Richie Porte has moved to Ineos Grenadiers, while 39-year-old Pieter Weening, who joined this year, and 35-year-old Will Clark, who spent the past two years with the team, were deemed redundant and not offered contract renewals.
Trek Segafredo recently signed a number of contracts, including Jasper Steven, who, like Pedersen, is the leader of the Classics, and Bauke Mollema, Toms Squidgins, Matteo Moschetti, Gianluca Brambilla, Jacopo Mosca, and Kane DeCorto announced extensions.
Morema and the Italian duo of Vincenzo Nibali and Giulio Ciccone will lead the team in the Grand Tour, while Egholm has been suspended for his social media behavior, and the Classics division, including Quinn Simmons, who missed his debut campaign on the cobbles this year He hopes to join them.
"We are looking forward to 2021, hoping to be consistent in the Classics and improve on what we achieved in 2020," Guercilena said. Nibali, Mollema, and Ciccone will be in the Grand Tour. They had a difficult season but are ready to fight again for big results. And the focus will be on the young riders to take new steps toward success."
