Josef Cerny is the first newcomer for Deceuninck Quickstep for the 2021 season. The Czech joins from the CCC team where he spent the past two seasons.
The 27-year-old scored the biggest win of his career last month at the Giro d'Italia, soloing to victory on a rain-soaked stage to Asti that was shortened to half its length due to rider protests.
Continuum Sports, the holding company for the CCC team, sold its World Tour license to Circus Wantigovert after failing to secure a new sponsor for 2021. Cherny became the second CCC rider to move to Dečuninck-Quick Step, following Fausto Masnada's mid-season move to Patrick Lefebvre's team.
"I am very happy to have the chance to ride for Wolfpack again next year. It's been a difficult season for everyone and I'm excited to join one of the best teams in the peloton," Cherney said in a statement released by Detunink-Quickstep. [I'm] looking forward to being part of this team's famous lead-out train and working hard up front when needed. I look forward to meeting everyone soon and making plans for the new season ahead."
Cerny turned pro with CCC in 2013, but returned to the continental level in 2017 and 2018 with Elkov Autor, winning the Czech road race and time trial titles in 2018 and joining the CCC team reborn through its merger with BMC for the next two season. In August of this year, he reclaimed the Czech time trial title.
Deceuninck-QuickStep's 2021 roster now stands at 29. Director Patrick Lefebvre did not expect to make any major moves in the transfer market, but indicated that he was open to opportunities that might present themselves.
"We already have a strong team in place for 2021, but when the opportunity to sign Josef presented itself, we couldn't pass it up," Lefebvre said.
"He is a strong and hardworking rider who can join the pack and is competitive in his own right, as evidenced by his stage win at the Giro d'Italia and his GC in the week-long stage race. We are delighted he will be joining our team next year."
