Gianni Moscon has announced that he will return to Ineos Grenadiers for 2021. Moscon's contract expires at the end of the season and he will only race for 20 days.
The 26-year-old's best result in 2020 was an eighth-place finish in the second stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, and his last professional win was the 2018 Tour of Guangxi.
In March, Moscon made headlines when he was disqualified from the Coure Brussel-Coone after being involved in a crash and throwing his bike at Jens Debusschere of B&B Hotels Vital Concepts.
Gabriel Rasch of Ineos Directeur Sportif condemned Moscon's actions and agreed with the decision, the latest in a series of controversial acts by Moscon, including punching Elie Gesbert and racially abusive remarks to Kevin Reza.
According to BiciSport, Moscon had been working on his family's apple farm at his Tolentino home for the past several weeks. His season ended with the Giro della Appennino in September, and despite having set his sights on the Northern Classics in October, he has been racing exclusively in Italy since racing resumed.
"I don't want to think about [next year] right now," Moscon told Bicisport (open in new tab). Otherwise, I will be distracted and my work will not be done well."
"This is my day job now and I need to switch off. I'll start thinking about next season in December. At the moment I don't know when I can resume racing or even what the calendar will look like."
The 2020 season was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Moscon said his father is suffering from the virus, although he is on the road to recovery.
"He is on the road to recovery. The pandemic affected him as well, but fortunately the worst is behind him." It's a shame he's not here, but his days are great and his work is going well."
Moscon's contract renewal is the team's latest move ahead of the 2021 season, although it has not yet been announced by Ineos. The team has already announced the signings of Richie Porte (Trek Segafredo), Adam Yates (Mitchelton Scott), Lawrence De Plus (Jumbo Visma), Thomas Pidcock (Trinity Racing), Daniel Martinez (EF Pro Cycling) Chris Froome (Israel Startup Nation) and Chris Lawless (Total Direct Energies) are leaving. Ian Stannard announced his retirement earlier this month.
