Transfers: Tesfacion turns pro, Serrano to Movistar, and more

We are in the midst of transfer season, and teams are announcing new signings, contract extensions, and other sponsor and roster transfers on an almost daily basis.

On Friday, Astana-Premier Tech announced six new signings, while Israel Startup Nation and Mitchelton-Scott announced several contract extensions.

But there are other contracts in the peloton that have been announced in the past few days. For more transfer information, click here.

On the same day that the "African team" announced that they will remain in the peloton next year, another player from the NTT Continental team took the next step and signed a professional contract.

Natnael Tesfazion has joined Androni Giocattoli Cidermec on a two-year contract, the Italian team announced on Friday. The 21-year-old follows a steady stream of Eritreans at the top level of cycling in recent years, with Natnael Berhane, Amanuel Ghebrey Xavier, Biniam Gourmay, and Melhawi Kudus racing for pro teams in 2021.

Tesfacion had a successful 2020 campaign, winning the Tour de Rwanda with a stage and youth class win at La Tropicale Amissa Bongo, where he finished second overall.

"Consistent with our youth project, which has achieved excellent results in recent years, we will continue with Natonel Tesfazion," said team boss Gianni Savio. The 21-year-old Eritrean showed his talent this year when he raced and won with the NTT Development team."

Gonzalo Serrano stepped up from the pro team to Movistar on the World Tour, signing a two-year contract with the Spanish team. The 26-year-old turned pro in 2018 with Caja Rural Seguros RGA and has since competed twice in the Vuelta a España.

This year he took his first pro win on the second stage of the Vuelta a Andalucía and also won the mountains prize at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. A climber with a good finishing kick, he will be the 28th climber in Movistar in 2021.

"I am very happy to have the chance to join such a strong Movistar team.

"My short-term goal is to learn as much as I can and run as many one-day classics as possible. So now my goal is to make the most of every race I participate in and spend the next few years in a meaningful way to continue to grow as a rider and as a person."

Movistar also renewed contracts with track specialists Alberto Torres and Sebastian Mora, both of whom recently enjoyed success in the European track championships, winning the Madison title and Mora winning the points race.

The new pro team for 2021, the Eolo-Kometa team led by Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso, continues to strengthen as it steps up to the second division of cycling. The team has added British duo Mark Christian and John Archibald to its confirmed roster of 15 riders. [Archibald joins from Ribble Well Dite and Christian from Canyon dhb.

Christian, the 2008-2010 British track champion, will run the 2017 Vuelta a España for Aqua Blue Sport, while Archibald, the 2019 team and individual Pursuit national champion, is the Harrogate World Championships and was part of the British team that won a bronze medal in the mixed relay TTT.

"I hope to get some good results for next season, especially in the time trial," Christian said. Of course, fighting for good results in the races we will face will be an exciting progression." I didn't know much about the foundation until I joined the team.

Archibald added that he was brought on by Sean Yates, the team's new performance director.

"I am looking forward to beginning this adventure," Archibald said. I knew the Contador Foundation was taking steps to make the jump to the professional team category." Sean Yates contacted me and explained what to expect next year and I immediately agreed to sign the contract. It is a great opportunity to run the most important race in the world and I am very grateful to the entire team."

Earlier this week, the team also announced the addition of Italian climber Edward Ravasi from UAE Team Emirates. The 26-year-old joins the team after spending four seasons on the World Tour.

"I am confident that we can take a step forward. Last season I fell at the Vuelta a Burgos and broke my femur, which forced me to stop racing at short notice. It's not an easy injury and I had to work hard to recover and come back."

"I'm very confident that I will be able to make a step forward.

Finally, Caja Rural Seguros RGA signed four new players to new contracts, and Bora Hansgrohe also announced a contract renewal with Martin Lars.

The Spanish team renewed the contracts of four domestiques for the 2021 season: Julen Amezqueta, John Irizarri, Alvaro Cuadros, and Joel Nicolau. The youngest of the quartet is Nicolau, 22, who joined the team in 2018.

"He is an all-rounder, very reliable and a regular in all races. We have great confidence in him in high-level races," team management said in a press release.

Meanwhile, Estonian Martin Lars will remain with Bora-Hansgrohe for a second year. The 27-year-old completed the Vuelta a España this year and also won two stages at the Tour of Slovakia.

"I think I did well this year," she said. Of course, the situation wasn't ideal, and like the rest of the field, the race calendar was quite disorganized this year. Nevertheless, we had our chances and we made the most of them at the Tour of Slovakia.

"I am very happy that the team continues to have faith in my abilities. I know I have a lot of potential and I am looking forward to growing with Bora Hansgrohe. Their trust gives me great motivation
