The future of the NTT Pro Cycling (open in new tab) team has been up in the air since the spring, but now that team principal Doug Ryder has managed to secure the support of Asos (open in new tab) and keep the team's World Tour license, Victor Kampenaerts ( ) can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The Hour record holder told Sporza (open in new tab) that the anxiety was stressful.
"I'm really relieved to remain a professional on a WorldTour team," Campenaerts told Sporza, admitting that he will remain with the African team, which will be known as Qhubeka-Assos in 2021. [The Giro d'Italia in October was the last race of the season. When you are racing, you have to perform, you have very little time to worry. As soon as the race is over, you go from a very busy life to a stress-free life. That was difficult."
"Moving and doing housework helped me to change my mind a bit, but I am very happy because I feel confident for 2021."
The team's future was in question when technology company NTT opted to renew its sponsorship in September. Bjarne Riis and his business partner, Lars Thayer Christensen, had intended to become the team's owners, but the plan fell through when they failed to find a sponsor.
After Riis left, Ryder secured critical support from Asos, strengthened his relationship with the bicycle charity Qhubeka, and solidified the team's future.
However, Ben O'Connor went to AG2R-Citroen, Roman Kreuziger to Gazprom Rusvelo, Edvald Boasson Hagen to Total Direct Energy, Michael Valgren to EF Pro Cycling, Louis Mainzhess moved to Circus Wantigover.
Others are Ben King (Rally Cycling), Samuel Battistella, Stefan Debod, Matteo Sobrero (Astana), Amanuel Gebregxavier (Trek Segafredo), Ryan Gibbons (UAE Team Emirates), Rasmus Tiller (Uno X) and others left.
The team now faces a major rebuilding project.
Max Walscheid, Domenico Pozzovivo, Andreas Stockbro, Michael Gogl, Dylan Sunderland, and Victor Kampenaerts will remain with the team for two years, while Carlos Barbero has received a one-year contract extension. Giacomo Nizzolo, who won the European and Italian championships this season, as well as stage wins in Paris-Nice and the Tour Down Under, is expected to stay, and will likely be announced soon, as he signed a contract on Sunday without revealing the team name.
