Israel Startup Nation's Omer Goldstein won the postponed 2020 Israeli Road Race Championships in Beit Gvrin on Saturday, ahead of Israel Cycling Academy's Eitan Levy and defending champion Guy Sagiv won the race, ahead of the following.
Goldstein completed his first Grand Tour at the Vuelta a EspaƱa.
"I admit it: I cried when I won," Goldstein said on the team website. You might say, 'It's far from the most important race of my life,' but for a kid who grew up in a small village in Israel and was raised as a young man on a bicycle, I dreamed that one day I would be a national champion."
"And time and time again, I came so close," continued the 24-year-old, who finished second last season, third in 2018, and fourth in 2015. 'But finally today it happened. I couldn't believe I finally won." So now you know why there were tears.
His WorldTour team will feature Goldstein, defending champion Sagiv, Guy Niv, and Itamar Einhorn in the All-Japan Championship road race, and all four have signed contract extensions with Israel Startup Nation for the upcoming season. The day after it was announced that they would be affiliated with the company, they made a big splash.
Sagiv finished third in the finish sprint, just ahead of Goldstein and Levy, while Niv broke away early but was not allowed to gain more than a two-minute advantage, and Itamar tried a late solo run but was caught with 5 km to go.
"He was running a great race," said Niv. He didn't want to give up the jersey without a fight."
But it was 20-year-old Levi who proved to be Goldstein's biggest rival, attacking on the final climb and trying to take the blue and white jersey.
"Maybe I made a mistake attacking on the last hill," he said. 'I jumped out in the last 100 meters,' he said. But he's a promising athlete.
