Milan-San Remo winner Wout van Eyre, Jumbo-Visma teammate and winner of this year's Vuelta a España Primoš Roglic, and women's road race world champion Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans), participate in the annual battle for the Velo Duol prize.
Tour de France winner Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates), Tour of Flanders winner Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Phoenix), and time trial world champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadier) are also on the list reported by many media outlets.
The Velo d'Or is widely regarded as the most prestigious cycling award, selected by a jury of international cycling journalists and comparable to the Ballon d'Or, awarded annually to the world's best soccer player.
Last year's winner, Julien Alaphilippe of Dečuninck-Quickstep, is also among this year's 15 nominees. Despite his victories in the World Championships and the Brabantspaille road race, a stage win in the Tour de France, and his success in the yellow jersey, the Frenchman may struggle to defend his crown against the likes of Roglic and Van Aert this year.
Three British riders are on this list: Irishman Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick Step), who won the green jersey at this year's Tour; Giro d'Italia winner Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers); and Australian sprinter Caleb Yuan (Lotto Soudal), who won two stages at the Tour.
There are no separate awards for men or women, and male cyclists have only ever been in the top three; in 2000, French track sprinter Felicia Balange won two gold medals at the Sydney Olympics in the individual sprint and 500 m time trial.
Alaphilippe won both the Vélo des Ors and Vélo des Ors Français in 2019.
The 15 athletes reportedly in contention for the 2020 Velo d'Or: Tao Geoghegan Hart (Great Britain) Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (France) Caleb Yuan (Australia) Julien Alaphilippe (France) Filippo Ganna (Italy) Jacob Fuglsang (Denmark) Primoš Roglic (Slovakia) Anna van der Breggen (Ned) Tadej Pogachal (Slovakia) Mathieu van der Poel (Ned) Wout van Aert (Belgium) Marc Hirschi (Switzerland) Daniel Martinez (Colombia) Remco Evenpole (Belgium) Sam Bennett (Ireland)
