After a 15-year hiatus from road cycling, world-renowned shoe and sportswear manufacturer Adidas has introduced a new line of road cycling shoes.
Like Nike, which recently made another return to the sport with its new SuperRep Cycle indoor cycling shoes, the German sports apparel giant has mysteriously disappeared from the road cycling market for a decade and a half, but classic Adidas fans of styling and subtle coloring will be thrilled to see its return.
Adidas has a proud history of competitive road shoes and special editions dating back to the Eddy Merckx era.
Adidas certainly recognizes that the cycling market is underserved, despite offering a very limited line of cycling kit. With its acquisition of premium mountain bike shoe brand FiveTen, adidas has established a presence in mountain biking, and the FiveTen brand is featured heavily in our sister site Bike Perfect's roundup of the best mountain bike flat pedal shoes
The company's brand is also a major player in the mountain bike market.
Its naming is wonderfully unpretentious. Adidas calls its new product simply a road shoe, and it is not targeted at picky amateur racers who want the lightest, stiffest carbon fiber sole possible.
With sustainability in mind, the uppers of adidas road shoes are constructed of prime green, which adidas claims is a fully recycled synthetic fiber. While the exact details of the road shoe's cooling properties have not yet been revealed, Adidas has unparalleled experience in running shoe design, and similar cooling airflow properties will be applied.
The German brand has not revealed the weight or sole stiffness of its new road shoes, but has confirmed that the sole construction is not carbon fiber. Adidas is using recycled material reinforced with fiberglass for the shoe's ground contact surface.
Pedal convergence is good, and Adidas has designed the cleat recesses of its road shoes to accommodate 3-bolt clipless pedals and cleat designs.
Laces are also used as a retention system in cycling shoes instead of Boa dials. This is a notable feature for riders who admire the classic upper aesthetics of laced road riding shoes and appreciate the low maintenance over time. Sourcing and replacing laces is easier than with the new tension dials and their wires.
Adidas road shoes feature a considered industrial design, and their tri-stripe styling is perhaps the most iconic of any activity shoe.
Available in the classic Adidas Black and White on White, the road shoe will retail for £130. At this price, it does not take direct aim at the best cycling shoes - which can retail for over £300 - instead, they look set to give the best budget cycling shoes a run for their money.
