Time trial world champion Filippo Ganna congratulated himself for testing negative for COVID-19 after a 21-day quarantine period.
The Ineos Grenadiers rider tested positive just days after winning the final stage of the Giro d'Italia. He was headed to the Montichiari stadium to train with his Italian teammates in final preparations for the European track championships, but was quickly quarantined and sent home when he developed symptoms of the virus.
Tests on November 5 confirmed that he was infected with the virus, and shortly thereafter his two Italian teammates, his sister, and his parents also tested positive.
Ganna spent time in isolation at his home near Verbania in northern Italy, but was unable to leave the house. Last week, tests showed that he was still positive for the virus, but further tests on Tuesday finally cleared him to end quarantine, which he celebrated via social media.
"I felt like a Ferrari stuck in Milan traffic at 8am," Ganna wrote on Twitter, complaining about being stuck at home. He showed off the negative results on Instagram.
"Like magic, this negative test has projected me onto the Monza Motor Racing Circuit! I'm finally #COVIDfree."

In accordance with UCI medical protocols, Ganna must undergo a complete medical check before beginning training for the 2021 season.
The Italian, who won four stages of last month's Giro d'Italia, apologized to Italian track teammates Liam Bertazzo and Michele Scartezzini.
"I am very sorry for infecting my teammates and friends Bertazzo and Scartezzini.
"We got a lot of attention throughout the year and did everything right. I relaxed for a day and a half (after getting out of the Ineos Grenadiers bubble), I threw away a lot of opportunities because of COVID-19, but now I have to accept what happened."
