Organizers of the UCI 2.1 Tour de Rwanda have announced that the race will be held under the strict COVID-19 protocol from February 21-28 in and around the capital Kigali. Israel's Startup Nation is the only World Tour team among the 17 participating teams, with the final two teams to be named on January 15.
According to a press release issued by the race organizers, the eight-day race will include a total of 16,347 meters of elevation, with the peloton climbing the Kigali Wall and Mt.
Fifteen teams have been announced, with two spots to be named in January. Israel Startup Nation will be at the starting line, but organizers have not confirmed whether newcomer Chris Froome will participate.
Four professional teams will also participate, including Total Direct Energy, B&B Hotels, Team Novo Nordisk, and Androni Giocattoli Sidermec. Seven continental teams will also participate, including two Rwanda-based teams, Benediction Cycling Team and Skol Adrian Cycling Academy. Three national teams from Rwanda, Algeria, and Ethiopia will participate.
Natnael Tesfatzion, a member of the NTT Continental team who will move to Androni in 2021, won the 2020 Tour de Rwanda ahead of Moise Mugisha (SKOL Adrienne Nyonsti Academy) and Kent Main (Protouch).
Tesfantzion was the first rider to win the Tour de Rwanda.
