Tobias Bayer, the current Austrian under-23 time trial champion, will leave the UCI Continental-level team Tyrol KTM to join the professional team Alpecin Phoenix next season under Mathieu van der Poel, his current team announced. The team announced.
Bayer was still a junior rider when he joined Tyrol KTM in 2018, but the following season he became the national under-23 road race champion and already won the junior time trial national title in 2017, and has now signed a two-year contract.
"Tobias has more than earned this career jump," said Tyrol KTM team manager Thomas Poup. His talent, aggressive racing style, and numerous good results have made him very interesting to big team scouts over the past two years."
Alpecin Phoenix won this year's UCI European Tour, earning the right to compete in next year's World Tour races, which include three Grand Tours and five one-day monuments.
2018 Paris-Roubaix runner-up Sylvain Dillier, as well as UAE Team Emirates sprinter Jasper Philipsen, Edward Plancaire of Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise, and Lionel Tamigneux of Bingoal-Wallonie Bruxelles, Xandro Moulis of Circus Wantigobert have been signed, strengthening an already strong roster of players.
This season, Van der Pol won the Tour of Flanders, the Dutch road race title, and stage wins in the World Tour stage races Tirreno-Adriatico and BinckBank Tour.
"I'm already looking forward to the next two years, where I can see Tobias competing side by side with Mathieu van der Pol," Pup said.
