While Danish cycling has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent seasons, with Trek-Segafredo's Mads Pedersen winning the 2019 World Championships road race and Søren Kraag Andersen winning two stages at this year's Tour de France, WorldTour will likely lose two Danes for next season.
In March, when the coronavirus crisis began, Hansen said he wanted to race as much as possible to win a renewal of his contract with Cofidis for 2021. But despite a late-season race program that included the Tour de Pollogne, Il Lombardia, and the Giro d'Italia, and the 30-year-old climber's strong performances in all three races, a contract extension never materialized, and the French WorldTour team tweeted on Sunday sent out a tweet thanking Hansen for his past two seasons with the team and wishing him luck in the future.
However, according to Ekstrabladet last week, Danish pro team Riwal Securitas is ready to sign Hansen.
"Right now, it's Riwal's only chance to do it professionally," Hansen told the Danish newspaper. 'We have no other choice.'
Despite the drop in level from WorldTour team to professional team, Hansen said it would be exciting to run for a Danish team again and hoped they could find the money to sign him.
"Having a Danish pro team is good for Danish cycling, so I want to be involved no matter what," Hansen said. 'It's also good for the young Danish riders to have a team looking out for them. And even if the team continues without me, I can still find work as a bike mechanic.
Steffen Kromann, Reweil's sports director, added, "If there is a team in 2021, I would love to have Jesper on it. He is a team player and has learned to fend for himself on the World Tour.
"We've talked and I've been completely honest with him," Kroman continued. 'I'm interested, but I can't make any promises. If he finds something else, he should definitely go for it, but if not, there may be an opening here."
Meanwhile, Michael Carvel is ready to end his career as a professional rider after not receiving a contract extension offer from NTT The young Danish rider has been a big hit in the Danish skiing community. The young Danish rider joined South Africa's WorldTourStead ahead of the 2020 season, but has apparently given up looking elsewhere after failing to convince the team management.
"I was actually thinking about making the decision to quit, but until now I've allowed myself to keep the door open just in case," Carvel told TV2 last weekend, according to EkstraBladet. But now that the team has told me there is no place for me, the door is closed."
"I couldn't win races at the highest level or make myself indispensable. Especially not now, when a hundred other riders are looking for a new contract."
Kalbel spent the 2018 season riding for French pro team Fortuno Samsic (now Arkea Samsic) and returned to the Danish national team Team Wau at the continental level for 2019, but at the young age of 25, he may be about to stop his career
