Colombian Under 23 Champion Arroyave Signs with EF Pro Cycling

Colombian under-23 champion Daniel Arroyave will step up to the World Tour in 2021 with EF Pro Cycling (open in new tab). He acknowledged the move in an interview with Colombian newspaper El Espectador on Monday.

EF is expected to sign a sponsorship deal with the Colombian government to complete its 2021 budget, and the Spanish website Zikloland claims that Uran's stay with the team is tied to this deal.

EF Pro Cycling has lost several key riders for 2021, with Tanel Kangert moving to Mitchelton Scott and Sepp Vanmarcke and Michael Woods (open in new tab) signing with Israeli startup Nation. However, team manager Jonathan Vaughters offered new contracts to all riders who accepted salary sacrifices during the spring COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Arroyave joins countrymen Rigoberto Uran (open in new tab) and Sergio Iguita on EF Pro Cycling's 2021 roster. The American team has moved Criterium du Dauphiné winner Daniel Martinez to Ineos Grenadiers.

"I'm happy to get the chance and join a big team with other Colombians, I'm excited and happy because the 2021 season is starting," Arroyave told El Espectador (open in new tab).

A native of Yalmar, Antioquia province, Aloyabe spent the 2020 season with UAE Team Colombia, which was interrupted by the pandemic. He explained that he was the sole winner of the Colombian Championships under-23 road race in Tunja in February and had been in contact with his new team since early in the year.

"We had been talking since the beginning of the year and the results I showed opened the door; I want to finish the 2020 season very well and start next year in a good way," said Aroyave, who will ride in Europe with the Romanian continental team Team Novak in the second half of 2019, Sibiu Tour, Tour of Hungary, and Tour of Serbia.

Arroyave describes himself as a complete rider and told El Espectador that he wants to shine in one-day races.

"I dream of being world champion, Olympic champion, winning the classics, and most of all, being very happy and sharing my joy with others," he said.

El Espectador also reported that Vuelta a Colombia winner Diego Camargo (Tierra de Atletas Colombia-GW Bicycles) may move to EF Pro Cycling.

Arroyave and Camargo are currently competing in the Clasico RCN.
