Primoš Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) lost to fellow Slovenian Tadej Pogaczar on the final stage of the Tour de France, but his consistent performance over the remainder of the 2020 season earned him the prestigious International Velodur award.
Julien Alaphilippe followed up last year's win of both awards with the Vélodôr prize for the best French player.
The Vélo d'Or prize was created in 1992 and is awarded by the French cycling magazine Vélo. This year's full results will be published in Friday's December issue of Vélo.
Roglic bounced back from his Tour de France defeat to win the Vuelta a España and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. He also topped the UCI rankings at the end of the 2020 season.
"I looked at the list of past winners and thought it was a really important award," Roglic told L'Equipe magazine when the winners were announced. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those who voted for me." I was really moved by the fact that I understood that it was a jury panel made up of journalists from all over the world."
[10Alaphilippe was crowned world road race champion at Imola, a stage of the Tour de France, where he wore the yellow jersey for three days and established himself as the best French rider of the year. When he was demoted in Liège, he accepted the punishment and praised Roglic for winning the Vélo d'Or, even though he thought he had won with the rainbow jersey.
"Primoz Roglic fully deserves this trophy. Last year I had a big, big season to win this trophy. It just makes sense for things to make sense for him to win this trophy this year."
"I am very happy to win the Vélo d'Or Français (French Best Player Award). This season has been special, there have been many challenges, but we have achieved many of our goals.
"The rainbow jersey is the most beautiful thing in the world and having worn it in several races before the season was over, I realized what an honor it is to have it. It gave me a lot of motivation for next year."
