Team Cubeca Asos has signed Sergio Henao for the 2021 season. The Colombian joins from UAE Team Emirates, where he spent the past two years.

Henao won Paris-Nice in 2017 and two Colombian national titles. While with Team Sky, he helped Chris Froome win the Tour de France in 2016 and 2017 and the Giro d'Italia in 2018 overall.

"I am very excited to sign with Team Cubeca Assos. I look forward to playing a key role in supporting my teammates in various races throughout the season and can't wait to take on this new challenge. But the important thing is to achieve good results for my new team and in doing so I hope to inspire future generations," Henao said in a statement released by his new team.

Henao's arrival was welcomed by team manager Doug Ryder. "Sergio will be a great addition to our team in the overall class. We look forward to the impact he will have on our team next season," Ryder said. We have a really great team with riders from many different cultures and nationalities, and I think that diversity will be our strength."

The future of Doug Ryder's team was in doubt until apparel brand Asos stepped in to help fund the team for the next two years following the departure of title sponsor NTT.

Following this news, European champion Giacomo Nizzolo re-signed with the team for 2021, and Qhubeka Assos announced new contracts that included Fabio Al, Simon Clark, Sean Bennett, and Harry Tanfield.

Henao is the 23rd player confirmed for the 2021 Qhubeka Assos roster, and the team said Saturday that the rest of the lineup will be finalized "in due course."

Speaking to Cycling News last month, Qhubeka Assos director sportif Lars Mikkelsen indicated that the team will choose from a "list of about 100 players" to complete its roster for the new season. Before Assos' backup was confirmed, a number of players left the team, including Edvald Boasson Hagen, who will move to Total Direct Energie next year, and Michael Valgren, who signed with EF Pro Cycling.

Mikkelsen described Henao as "a very valuable team member" and added: "He is a double Colombian champion and obviously spent many years with Team Sky.
