Group Crash at Australian Race Injures Several Riders

The final day of the elite men's race of the nine-day Australian National Road Series in New South Wales was cancelled after a stopped bike caused a massive crash that hospitalized several riders.

The elite men's circuit race, held at Farrants Hill, was in the midst of a flurry of attacks in the early stages of the race when the peloton was racing flat out and turned a blind corner into a police motorcycle that had been stopped on the road to control a driver who had entered the course. He ran into it and the race was stopped after the first lap.

According to SBS, the front runners managed to avoid the vehicle, but those in the back were not so lucky. Cameron Scott (ARA-Pro Racing Sunshine Coast) ran into the bike at an estimated 55-60 km/h, causing a major crash in the peloton.

Scott broke his pelvis, but Ben Carman (Nero Continental) was the most seriously injured and was airlifted from the track. Carman fractured his tibia, fibula, and patella and was placed in a temporary medical coma before undergoing surgery. Late Sunday, the surgery was over and he was awake and talking to his family.

Tom Bolton (Oliver's Real Food Racing) cut his leg and head, Liam White (Oliver's Real Food Racing) suffered a shoulder injury requiring surgery, and Tom Chapman (Bridgestone) broke his tibia.

According to SBS Cycling Central (open in new tab), a police officer was treated for an arm injury.

The men's race was cancelled, but the women's race was held as scheduled a few hours later. Brendan Johnston (CCS Canberra) won the overall series title and Sarah Gigante took the women's title.

The NRS was held despite the cancellation of the 2021 Tour Down Under and the Herald Sun Tour due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Australian Championships are scheduled to take place in early February.
